Your duties

The nature of the work done by chemists depends on the sort of company they work in and may include:

  • Developing, blending and testing chemical products
  • Undertaking research and development
  • Troubleshooting production problems
  • Developing standards and procedures for chemical analysis and use
  • Monitoring usage of chemicals offshore, and analysing them against production/process data
  • Laboratory testing of samples sent from offshore

Your role in the industry

Chemists in the oil and gas industry can work in a variety of roles within operators, specialist chemical companies, well services companies, consultancies, etc, working both onshore and offshore. The use of chemicals and the application of chemistry are essential to the industry. They enhance production performance, prevent corrosion and support exploration activities. The continuous development of new chemical products is also an essential part of the oil and gas industry’s future.

Your role in the industry

This role is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and improvement of large equipment and facilities which are used for processing and producing oil and gas. They may be situated either onshore or offshore. Process engineers support the plant equipment, both onshore and offshore, to ensure that it remains efficient and productive. They can work for a range of companies, including those which manage or own production facilities (known as operators), service companies and engineering consultancies.

Your career development

You could progress to roles including cementing field supervisor, field specialist or drilling operations.

Your salary

£18,000 - £25,000, rising to £40,000 - £55,000 once experienced

Your desirable qualifications

Holding a commercial operators licence is desirable, as is oilfield equipment operating experience, a general knowledge of drilling and completion techniques, and drilling or work over rig operations.
