Marine engineers design, build, test and repair boats, ships, remote operated vehicles, offshore platforms and drill ships. This role provides a specialised skill set to the industry, regardless of which discipline the individual specialises in (for example: dynamic positioning, shipping/ vessels, design, Floating Production Storage Offshore (FPSO)). The knowledge of marine engineers is essential to the industry, to ensure that technical standards are maintained and excellence is sought.
As a marine engineer, your duties might encompass:
You must have a BTEC HNC/HND or degree in an engineering subject.
Employers may also look for training as an engineering officer with the Merchant Navy or Royal Navy, plus holders of the offshore survival certificate.
£20,000 - £35,000, rising to £45,000 - £100,000 with experience.
You could progress to roles including discipline specialist, ROV engineer, chief engineer, marine manager or senior marine engineer.
